Adventure Guides is an amazing program offered by the Encinitas Magdalena Ecke YMCA and has been active for over 55 years. The YMCA has several Adventure Guides clubs focused on monthly camping events with dads and daughters, and our club is called Coyote. We're made up of six different groups (which we call "packs"): Bear, Bobcat, Chameleon, Sasquatch, Wallaby and Yosemite. On a monthly basis, all 6 packs come to every campout and dads and daughters and their pack have outdoor adventures, camp, eat and bond. There is no other commitment other than a weekend camping trip and all trips are optional. If your daughter makes friends from another pack, they’ll see them at the next campout.
The Adventure Guides season runs from September to June of the following year, following the school session. We have one event per month and, in December, we create a float that is entered into the Encinitas Christmas Holiday Parade. It's an absolute blast and the girls get to walk in the parade in front of thousands of people. We build the float on a campsite at San Elijo Beach and then walk over to the parade. This is a can't miss event and for the girls, an experience they will never forget.
NO! Some dads come to every campout, some only make it out for one. We all have different schedules, and you’ll get no pressure from the group to impact your existing schedule or budget. We just enjoy the time we’re together.
Got something on Friday, and can’t arrive until Saturday? No prob! Need to take off at dawn on Sunday to get to a game? That’s just fine. This group is here when you want it, make it work around your schedule.
At bare minimum you need:
Sleeping bags
Tent and bedding (trailers and RVs ok, if you give the Y some notice)
Clothes
Flashlight
Water bottle and any beverages you prefer
Recommend to bring:
Snacks for you and your daughter for between meals
Bikes, scooters (depending on camping location)
We have a trophy that cycles through the different packs in the Coyote Club. We have competitions each campout which the Coyote packs contend for. Sometimes it’s a relay race, sometimes it's who can make the best ice cream with rock salt in a ziplock bag - whatever it is, it's bound to be entertaining and/or silly. We like cheering on and encouraging our fellow campers, but we don’t get highly competitive. If you win something, great. If you don’t, no biggie. The weekend is about having fun and spending quality time with our daughters.
Head on over to the "typical weekend" webpage. It should give you a pretty good overview of what to expect. (psst... no campout is typical)
Many activities we have will focus on the “six aims” of the Coyote Club. Girls can earn patches by memorizing and reciting these to Big Chief and Med.
To be clean in body and pure in heart
To be friends always with my dad/daughter
To love the sacred circle of my family
To listen while others speak
To love my neighbor as myself
To seek and preserve the beauty of the Great Spirit’s work in forest, field and stream
